Patrice Awonseba Baba Musah came to the Czech Republic from Ghana in 2005. He received a scholarship to study pharmacy, but first, he had to learn Czech at the ILPS CU language courses, which changed his life. Today Patrice is a well-known and experienced obstetrician and gynaecologist who has been nominated for the prestigious Angel Award.
„I didn’t know that I would become a doctor; I got a scholarship to study pharmaceuticals. However, at a language school, my teacher said I was not a bad student and could study medicine well. She insisted that I apply to the Faculty of Medicine, and now I am a doctor,“ tells Patrice about his life 16 years ago.
Another important decision was specialization choice. This happened when, during Patrice’s internship at a clinic, he was present during childbirth for the first time in his life. „At that moment, I thought it was a miracle and that this is what I should choose to do,“ recalls Patrice.
Life in the Czech Republic was not easy for Patrice, especially during the first year, when he had just begun to learn Czech and did not know anyone here. It also was the first time he had to cook, clean and shop by himself. But now, he is grateful for this opportunity.
To date, Patrice has delivered over a thousand babies in the Czech Republic, and this year he was nominated for the Angel Prize, which is awarded to healthcare professionals.
„For me, this means that all people here have equal opportunities. In some countries, a foreigner is not allowed to become the head of a department or even work at a clinic,“ concluded Patrice.
In September, his younger sister will come to study in the Czech Republic.
