I have been living in Czechia for almost 5 years and I often hear the question “How to emigrate to the Czech Republic?” Well, there are several ways to do this.
The first thing you need to know is that the Czech Republic is not Australia or Canada, meaning that there are no special programs for immigration here. You can only get a residence permit if you find a job, start your own business, move for family reunification purposes or to study.
Family
I think that the option of reuniting with your family is of little interest to you, otherwise you would not have searched “How to move to the Czech Republic” on the Internet. But just in case, I’ll tell you that if a person has at least a residence permit, they can already apply for family reunification. You can reunite with your children and spouse. Brothers and sisters, uncles and aunts, other members of your large friendly family will be left behind. Even parents can move to you only after they turn 65.
Business
According to the law, it is possible to start a company in the Czech Republic and move as an entrepreneur, but in fact it is not feasible. The Internet says that such visas are hardly issued, although in the nineties they basically were given to anyone. Now, either the Czech Republic has realized that not all entrepreneurs are equally useful, and many of them just open dummies with fake accounting; or simply changed the migration policy.
Work
To come on a work visa, you need to find a job first. The only source of information about positions that foreigners can apply for is on the website of the Labor Exchange. At the same time, the employer has to be very interested in you, because obtaining a work visa is not a quick process and will require a lot of effort not only from you, but also from the receiving side.
Usually, employers are wiling to fight for highly qualified specialists. Otherwise, though there are entire agencies that help to come and get a job that does not require education or skills, I don’t claim to know living and working conditions of the people who have come to the Czech Republic like that.
Studies
Studying at a higher educational institution in the Czech Republic is a legitimate basis for obtaining a residence permit in this country. Meanwhile, students have an opportunity to work part-time when getting their bachelor’s, and full-time while getting their master’s or doctor’s degree. Moreover, after graduation, you will have another 9 months to find a job in the Czech Republic.
You just need to apply for the appropriate visa in time. Also, diplomas of Czech universities are recognized in other European countries without any problems. And yes, higher education in state universities is free if you know Czech. It is possible to master this language at the B1/B2 level, which is required for universities, in one year.

For this purpose, there are special preparatory courses of Charles University in the Czech Republic. At these courses you not only learn the Czech language as such, but also your specialty subjects. For example, future engineers study physics and math, future doctors – chemistry, physics and biology, and future humanities students learn how to write large detailed essays. This approach allows not only to pass the entrance exams easily, but also not to get confused in the first year, when teachers start throwing around terminology.
The preparatory courses of Charles University help to prepare for entrance exams in the main fields: engineering, humanities, art-related specialties, medicine, natural sciences, economics and architecture. You can find out more about the courses here.
