Robot and robot are two completely different words, though they are spelled exactly the same. One of them translates as “robot” and the other as “food processor”, but how can you tell what meaning is implied? It’s simple – ask the person that you are having a conversation with to put the word in the form of the first case plural. Roboty and roboti. Yeah, well, now everything is clear – the first one is “food processors”, and the second word is translated as “robots”. How do we know this?

It’s simple – thanks to their endings. The fact is that animate and inanimate masculine nouns are pronounced (and written) differently in their plural forms. Animate nouns are (often, but not always) palatalized, while inanimate nouns are not. Therefore, the humanlike “animate” robot in plural changes to roboti, and the “lifeless” kitchen utensils remain in plural the same unpalatalized and hard – roboty.
